There’s a lot going on here in Matt 10; much of which cannot be adequately understood, except for the perspective of Matt 16. In Matt 16, Jesus spoke of the need, among his followers to take up their cross and follow him. He spoke of the seeming paradox that those who seek to save their lives will lose them, but those who lose their lives, for his sake, will find them. In Matt 10, we see what all this looks like, in living color, with a world in turmoil and danger on every hand. Matt 10 shows us what it looks like to lay down our lives, to lose them for Jesus’ sake, so that we might find our real life and our truest selves. How can we ever live through all this stuff? We know our Shepherd and the father watching over us? Well, if he cares about the sparrow, he cares about us. He even tells us that we are much more valuable than that little sparrow. There is no detail of our lives that is not known to our Father. THAT’S how we get through the stuff.
