Friday Morning Prayer

On a hill far away stood an old rugged cross,
The emblem of suff’ring and shame;
And I love that old cross where the Dearest and Best
For a world of lost sinners was slain.

So I’ll cherish the old rugged cross,
Till my trophies at last I lay down;
I will cling to the old rugged cross,
And exchange it someday for a crown.

“For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.”

Beloved,

We rejoice in the way of the cross! This month counts 30 years ago when our gracious God called me to himself. Truly, God’s effective power to initiate, sustain, and continue this great salvation! No boasting, other than boasting in our Lord. “How Great Thou Art! And when I think that God his son not sparing, sent him to die, I scarce can take it in, that on the cross my burden gladly bearing, he bled and died to take away my sin.”

Christ crucified, buried, and resurrected! We celebrate this truth every day and overflow this seemingly foolish message. Indeed, “Paul says, it was God’s good purpose to save those who believe by the seemingly foolish process of preaching the cross.” Therefore, although the “message of the cross” is foolishness to some, we know with great confidence, it is the power of God to those who are being saved.

Sister/Brother, through your struggles and sufferings, for we all suffer various trials and tribulations, cling to the old rugged cross. “To the old rugged cross I will ever be true; its shame and reproach gladly bear; then He’ll call me to my home far away, where His glory forever I’ll share.”

Be encouraged, excited, and full of joy, overflowing because of our redemption, solely because of God’s grace. Through the cross we have been called to intimate, meaningful, a very real fellowship with God, In Christ. I pray you know this fellowship every day; pursuing our God through Bible study, much secret prayer, and fellowship. Paul says, “It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God—that is, our righteousness, holiness, and redemption.”

“So it is not through human wisdom, strength, or worldly position that one is saved, but only through God’s wise plan and power accomplished through the cross.”

Oh, that old rugged cross, so despised by the world,
Has a wondrous attraction for me;
For the dear Lamb of God left His glory above
To bear it to dark Calvary.

In that old rugged cross, stained with blood so divine,
A wondrous beauty I see,
For ’twas on that old cross Jesus suffered and died,
To pardon and sanctify me.

To the old rugged cross I will ever be true;
Its shame and reproach gladly bear;
Then He’ll call me someday to my home far away,
Where His glory forever I’ll share.
